Sheffield Harmony is a chorus of extraordinary women who gather together to sing four part harmony in the barbershop style. We are part of Sweet Adelines International.

About

Sheffield Harmony was founded in 1978 in the dining room of our Treasurer, Joan. Since then, the chorus has gone from strength to strength and now we have 40 members.

The chorus has taken part in competitions in both the UK and in Spain to help us to continue to develop our musical skills.

There have been many highlights away from the competition stage. We have featured on film, television and radio including Radio Sheffield’s ‘Good News Friday’ and appearing in 2014’s Pulp: A Film about Life, Death and Supermarkets. The chorus recorded a barbershop version of ‘Common People’ that features on the film’s soundtrack, and performed at the premiere at Sheffield City Hall! Watch here.

During 2020’s Coronavirus lockdown, we have put together a number of virtual performances including creating a virtual chorus video to support the Festival of Lights at St Luke’s Hospice as we were unable to perform in person as we have for a number of years.

We get together every Monday to rehearse and have fun. During lockdown we have continued to meet via a zoom meeting: singing, socialising and supporting each other through a difficult period for everyone. We’ve learned new songs together and created virtual chorus recordings which you can see here.

We’re always looking for new members to share the love of barbershop with, whether during our virtual chorus time or when we are able to get back to singing together in person!

On April 26th we have an Open Virtual Rehearsal – you can join us for this informal event to explore the experience of a typical rehearsal, enjoy the sound of a cappella four-part harmony and learn a short section of the chart-topping single Shallow, originally sung by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in the 2018 hit musical film A Star Is Born.

Whether you’re an experienced singer, or if you’ve never sung outside of your own shower before, we’d love for you to come and try singing with us. It doesn’t matter where your range lies – in four part harmony there is a place for those who like to sing high, low or somewhere in between.

If you’ve never sung barbershop before, you might want to read a bit more about it here.

We usually rehearse on Monday nights at High Storrs School, Sheffield S11 7LH.

Due to Covid restrictions we’ve currently moved our rehearsals online so we meet virtually on Monday nights from 7:30-9pm on Zoom.
